Famous Fish Dishes from Across the World: Recipe for Fish Tikka Masala

Fish Tikka Masala is a beloved dish originating from Indian cuisine, now enjoyed worldwide for its rich flavors. Here's a simple recipe to try at home:

Ingredients

  • For the Fish Marinade:

    • 500g (1 lb) firm white fish (e.g., cod, haddock, or tilapia), cut into chunks
    • 1 cup plain yogurt
    • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
    • 2 tsp ground cumin
    • 2 tsp ground coriander
    • 1 tsp turmeric powder
    • 1 tsp red chili powder
    • 1 tbsp lemon juice
    • Salt to taste
  • For the Masala Sauce:

    • 2 tbsp vegetable oil or ghee
    • 1 large onion, finely chopped
    • 2 garlic cloves, minced
    • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
    • 2 medium tomatoes, pureed
    • 1 tsp turmeric powder
    • 1 tsp ground cumin
    • 1 tsp ground coriander
    • 1 tsp garam masala
    • 1/2 tsp red chili powder (adjust to taste)
    • 1/2 cup heavy cream (or coconut milk for a lighter version)
    • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
    • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Marinate the Fish:

    • In a large bowl, combine yogurt, ginger-garlic paste, spices, lemon juice, and salt.
    • Add the fish chunks, ensuring they are well-coated.
    • Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  2. Cook the Fish:

    • Preheat a grill pan or oven to medium-high heat.
    • Grill the marinated fish pieces until cooked through and slightly charred (around 3-4 minutes per side). Set aside.
  3. Prepare the Masala Sauce:

    • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
    • Stir in minced garlic and grated ginger, cooking until fragrant (about 1 minute).
    • Add the pureed tomatoes and cook for 5-7 minutes until the mixture thickens and the oil separates.
    • Mix in turmeric, cumin, coriander, garam masala, and chili powder. Cook for another 2 minutes.
    • Lower the heat and stir in the cream, simmering gently until the sauce is creamy and smooth. Season with salt.
  4. Combine and Garnish:

    • Add the grilled fish to the sauce, gently folding to coat the pieces without breaking them.
    • Simmer for 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
    • Garnish with fresh cilantro.
  5. Serve:

    • Serve hot with steamed basmati rice, naan, or roti.

Enjoy this delightful dish that blends smoky, spiced fish with a luscious, aromatic sauce!
