Ingredients:

For the pastry:

  • 1 sheet of puff pastry (store-bought or homemade), thawed
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon water

For the filling:

  • 1/2 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tablespoons fresh dill, finely chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Topping:

  • 8 thin slices of smoked salmon
  • 2 tablespoons capers
  • Fresh parsley or dill sprigs for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the puff pastry:

    • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface to smooth the edges.
    • Cut the pastry into small squares (approximately 2x2 inches).
    • Place the squares on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  2. Egg wash:

    • In a small bowl, whisk the egg with water.
    • Brush the tops of the pastry squares with the egg wash.
  3. Bake the pastry:

    • Bake for 12–15 minutes or until the pastry is golden and puffed.
    • Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely.
  4. Make the filling:

    • In a mixing bowl, combine cream cheese, dill, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and lemon juice.
    • Mix until smooth and creamy.
  5. Assemble the appetizer:

    • Once the puff pastry squares are cool, gently press down the center of each square to create a small cavity.
    • Pipe or spoon a dollop of the cream cheese mixture into the cavity.
  6. Add the toppings:

    • Place a folded slice of smoked salmon on top of the filling.
    • Garnish with a few capers and a sprig of fresh parsley or dill.
  7. Serve:
